On a Course of Curiosity

Artist Statement

I perceive the world through “orange tinted glasses” because I choose to view life through a lens of childlike wonder. Children see the unknown with innocence, a perspective I will not give up as I mature. In my work, I focus on suspending transient moments in time to convey a continuing childlike experience of novelty. As I have grown older, my curiosity has grown concurrently. In my search to decipher the unknown, I experiment with a diverse range of artistic mediums to understand how experiences are created. As a result, I have acquired numerous artistic skill sets from sewing, digital rendering, ceramics, printmaking, knitting, to design prototyping. All of which have given me the confidence to bring my visions to life. My work is a reflection of the artistic and design skills I have gained over the years.

As worries about my future begin to outweigh my past, when I reflect on my purpose in life, I perceive the color orange slowly becoming a smaller part of the whole. As expectations grow, I long to achieve what is surely an unattainable perfection: the ability to construct my path by playing the cards just right. Fortunately, my wish for control is overpowered by my longing to explore the undiscovered. As I battle to balance a childlike wonder with a growing maturity, I realize the beauty of life lies within the unknown. Constantly uncovering new experiences and honing new skills driven by curiosity guides me toward a future in which uncovering novelty is a continuous cycle. I have learned that exploration doesn’t need to stop because of maturity, since there are always new perspectives to learn and to see.

Knitting has become a recent passion of mine, yet it feels like a pattern engraved in me since I was born. Hours, days, months of work peeled away in an instant as loops unravel becoming back to what it once was, yarn. Yet still bent and left with kinks from the position it used to be in. However, I see my failure as an opportunity to make something even better, using the knowledge I gained along the way.
